Prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have as believers, but let’s be honest—sometimes it’s hard to know what to say. Maybe you’re facing a situation that feels too big for words, or perhaps you’re just feeling distant from God. Whatever the reason, it’s okay to struggle with prayer. Even the disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).
One of the simplest ways to pray is to follow the model Jesus gave us in the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). It includes praise (“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name”), surrender (“Your kingdom come, your will be done”), petition (“Give us today our daily bread”), confession (“Forgive us our debts”), and protection (“Deliver us from evil”). This framework can guide you when you’re unsure where to start.
Another approach is to pray Scripture. The Psalms, for example, are filled with prayers that express every emotion—joy, sorrow, anger, and hope. When you don’t know what to say, let God’s Word speak for you. For instance, you could pray Psalm 23 when you’re feeling anxious or Psalm 51 when you need to confess sin.
Finally, remember that prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the most powerful prayers are the simplest: “God, help me.” “Thank You, Lord.” “I trust You.” Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us when we don’t have the words. So even when you feel stuck, know that God hears your heart.
Prayer is a conversation with your Heavenly Father. He’s not looking for perfect words—He just wants you to come to Him.
